Step 3 · Measured wind at cloud base
Mark the same cloud feature at least twice, ideally 15–60 seconds apart.
How to use the Cloud Tracker
- Get the cloud base: tap Use local weather or type temp and dew point (spread × 400 ft).
- Tap Open viewfinder and allow camera and motion access.
- Zoom in (slider or pinch) and put a sharp cloud feature — a corner or edge of the base — on the red dot inside the circle. Tap MARK.
- Follow that same feature as it drifts and mark it again every 10–20 seconds. The live speed at the top updates with each mark.
- Tap ✕ to see the full results and your marks.
- Zoom doesn't affect the maths. Only the centre dot matters.
- Works at any angle. Steepest (near overhead) is most accurate. Avoid below 30°.
- Assumes a flat cumulus base. Not for layered or towering cloud.
- Speed only needs relative angles, so it's robust. Direction depends on your compass, so calibrate it and keep away from cars and metal.
- The spread × 400 ft rule is roughly ±20%, and speed scales directly with it.
